Top 10 Market Day Tips for Makers

There’s nothing quite like market day. The buzz of the crowd, the smell of coffee, the chance to meet new customers (and catch up with regulars) - it’s one of the best parts of being a maker.

But we also know that preparing for a market can feel overwhelming. From setting up your stall to chatting confidently with customers, there’s a lot to think about. Over the years, we’ve seen what works (and what doesn’t), so here are our Top 10 Market Day Tips to help you feel prepared, confident, and ready to make the most of every market.

1. Play with Height and Lighting

A flat table is never as eye-catching as one with layers. Use boxes, shelves, or stands to display products at different heights. If your products sparkle or need extra detail to shine, consider battery-powered lighting (as not all venues provide electricity). Good lighting makes all the difference!

2. Keep It Simple

A crowded, chaotic stall can overwhelm customers. Instead, curate your table so your top sellers and most eye-catching products stand out. Remember: less is often more.

3. Make Your Business Name Clear

Whether it’s a banner, sign, or stand, make sure your business name and logo are easy to see. If you have brand colours, weave them into your stall design. Customers should walk away knowing who you are (and be able to find you again).

4. Practise Your Pitch

Friendly, approachable, and passionate wins every time. You don’t need a scripted sales pitch, but know your story - why you make what you make. Often it’s your story, not just your product, that keeps people coming back.

5. Price Clearly

Don’t make customers guess. Label everything - prices, ingredients, care instructions - so they can browse even if you’re busy. It creates trust and makes the buying process smoother.

6. Wear or Use Your Products

Nothing beats showing your products in action. Whether it’s wearing your jewellery, carrying your tote bag, or sipping from your handmade mug, use your own products - it helps customers imagine themselves with them too.

7. Collect Emails

Markets are about more than one-off sales. Encourage people to join your newsletter so they can hear about new products, restocks, or upcoming markets. A sign-up sheet or QR code works perfectly - and gives you a way to stay connected long after the market ends.

8. Add Colour and Fun

Colour draws people in! Group products by colour themes or use a bold tablecloth to tie your stall together. If you can, add an interactive element like a “seconds box” or a lucky dip - customers love a little surprise.

9. Be Engaged (Online and Off)

Take a few photos of your stall before the day gets busy and share them on social media - and don’t forget to tag the market organiser and venue. Then put your phone down and engage with the people in front of you. Smile, chat, and share your passion - people buy from people.

10. Look After Yourself

Markets can be long days. Pack water, snacks, and lunch to keep your energy up. A refreshed, smiling maker is far more inviting than one who’s running on empty.

Final Thoughts

Market days are more than sales - they’re opportunities to share your story, meet your community, and showcase the incredible value of handmade. With a little planning, your stall can shine, your confidence can grow, and your customers will leave with more than just a product - they’ll leave with a story.
