Market Etiquette & how to be a good neighbour!

How to show up, stand out and shine at every market - the unwritten rules for best market practice. Markets are more than just a place to sell your goods — they’re a community. Whether it’s your first market or your hundredth, practicing good etiquette helps everyone have a successful (and enjoyable!) day. Here are some golden rules to keep in mind!

1. Arrive Early and Be Prepared

Give yourself plenty of time for setup. Nothing stresses organiser’s and neighbour’s more than a vendor scrambling in last minute. Bring all the essentials: float for change, bags, signage, and backup supplies.

2. Respect Your Space (and Others’)

Stick to your allotted booth size. Avoid spilling into your neighbour’s space or blocking walkways — a tidy booth not only looks professional but also keeps the market flowing smoothly.

3. Be Friendly and Approachable

A warm smile and genuine conversation go a long way. Greet people who stop by, but avoid being overly pushy. Let your craft and passion speak for itself.

4. Support Your Fellow Makers

Markets thrive on community. Share social media posts, swap compliments, and, if you can, shop from other makers. A rising tide lifts all boats.

5. Keep It Clean

At the end of the day, leave your space as you found it (or cleaner!). Pack out trash, take down tape, and make it easy for organiser’s to welcome you back.

6. Follow Market Rules

Every market has its own guidelines — from parking to booth displays. Following them not only shows respect but also helps events run smoothly for everyone.

7. Practice Patience and Positivity

Some markets are busy, some are slow — that’s the nature of handmade business. A positive attitude leaves a lasting impression on customers and organiser's alike.

8. Be Kind To Organisers

A lot of time, passion, energy and organising goes into each event. There are things we can control and others that we can not. Please be mindful of how you speak and interact with them, and provide feedback in a constructive manner.

Final Thoughts

Good market etiquette makes you stand out as a professional, builds relationships, and ensures that both you and your community thrive.
