The Reality Behind Running Handmade Markets

There’s a side of running markets that people don’t often see.

The quiet days.  The ones where you do everything right - and it still doesn’t quite work.

You promote the life out of it. You post across every platform.

You put the signs out, you send the emails and you boost the posts.

You pray for good weather, you do everything that’s worked before.

And sometimes… it still just doesn’t land.

And honestly? It’s gutting.

The Reality Behind Every Market Stall

When a market is quiet, it’s not just a “slow day”.

Behind every single stall is a real person who has invested time, energy and money into being there.Weeks spent making stock.Evenings packing boxes. Early mornings loading cars. Fuel costs. Stall fees. A full day given up in the hope that customers will come.

For many small businesses, a market day isn’t just a nice outing - it’s an important opportunity to sell products, meet customers and keep their business moving forward.

So when the crowds don’t show up, it hits hard. And as a market organiser, that responsibility sits heavy.

What People Don’t See Behind the Scenes

There is a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes before a single stall is even set up. Applications to review.  Carefully curating the right mix of traders. Planning layouts.  Organising logistics, and licensing. Marketing campaigns. Social media posts. Emails to mailing lists. Designing signage.Watching the weather forecast like a hawk.

And then on the day itself  - setting up, troubleshooting, supporting traders, managing issues and trying to create the best possible experience for everyone involved. But beyond the logistics, there’s something even more important.

The people.  Market organisers care deeply about the makers who trade with them. The small businesses who trust them with their time, their products and their weekends.

Markets Can Be Magical… But They’re Also Unpredictable

Markets can be incredible. They can be the place where someone makes their very first sale. They can be where a small brand meets customers who become loyal supporters for years. They can be where communities come together and discover talented local makers they never knew existed.

But markets can also be unpredictable. No matter how much planning, promotion and preparation goes into them, some days simply don’t go the way you hoped.

And that’s one of the hardest parts of running them.

Why We Keep Showing Up

Even when a market doesn’t go to plan, the work doesn’t stop. Market organisers keep learning. Keep improving. Keep promoting. Keep finding ways to bring more people through the doors. Because supporting small businesses matters. And building spaces where makers can showcase their work is worth the effort - even on the tough days.

A Thank You to the Makers
